Vail Daily letter: Avon’s crazy ideas

I have lived in the valley since 1997 and it has never ceased to amaze me how Avon seems to shoot itself in the foot year after year.

Having been away for a few months, imagine my surprise to see their latest blunder with what has been done to the main drag around the Post Office and the two main banks. It’s one thing to want to be more bicycle friendly (that takes a 2-foot wide strip), but then to add angled parking on one side of the street and parallel parking on the other is just — I have to say it — nuts! Perhaps the genius who came up with that one can explain how restricting one of the main streets in Avon to two narrow lanes helps tourism.

If the town “fathers” want a bike lane, have one on one side of the road.

If they want to slow traffic down, instead of narrowing the road that the taxpayers paid a lot of money to create, limit the speed and have one of Avon’s finest sit there with a radar gun and write tickets to help balance the budget.

Happily, I’m not tourist with a big van or I’d think twice before ever venturing into Avon.
