Vail Daily letter: Eggnog roundup
Eggnog — love it, hate it, mix it with liquor. The mixers for nog are endless — from rum, vodka, brandy and wine — even ginger ale and orange juice go well with it.
However you have it, you know you will be serving it this year at parties.
So, you will be faced with making a choice as to what kind to buy, and there are quite a few choices.
Here is a quick summary by brand. All of these brands are available at local grocers/Walmart:
• Meadow Gold: 220 calories per serving. Contains Guar Gum, cellulose gum and diglicerides. Opinion: The most heavily modified and stabilized, ready for whatever you want to taint it with.

• Sintons: 177 calories per serving (very sweet). Contains guar gum, no diglycerides. Opinion: Traditional taste, on the sickly sweet side — born for a mixer.
• Darigold Pumpkin Spice: 190 calories per serving. Contains gar gum and diglycerides. Opinion: Much like Sintons, tastes slightly more artificial. Very sweet, needs mixers.
• Darigold Vanilla Cream: 180 calories per serving. Contains guar gum and diglycerides. Opinion: Much like Sintons, needs rum or at least milk.
• Promise Land: 200 calories per serving. Contains guar gum, no diglycerides. Opinion: Syrupy. Thickest of the lot. Probably won’t freeze very quickly on a cold night.
• Southern Comfort Brand, Traditional: 200 calories per serving. Contains guar gum and diglycerides. Opinion: Highly modified, with a strange coating property that is settling to the digestion. This is my pepto-bismo.
• Southern Comfort Brand, Vanilla Spice: 220 calories per serving. Contains guar gum and diglycerides. Opinion: Sweeter than traditional. Would go well with cream-based liquors.
• Horizon Organic: 140 calories per serving. Contains guar gum, no diglycerides. Opinion: Most traditional, best if you are serving straight or to small children. Healthily — not a word, but you can’t call any of this stuff healthy!
