Vail Daily letter: Getting to work

It’s hard to believe that two months have already passed since the 2014 elections. On Jan. 7, the 70th Colorado General Assembly was gaveled into action and your state Legislature got to work. I want to thank all of the voters who participated in the recent elections and whether I earned your vote or not, know that our work to build an economy that gives the middle class a fair shot at success has just begun. It is a great honor to represent the residents of Senate District 5 in the Colorado State Senate, and I look forward to working for you.

Our communities in Western Colorado have learned all too well the real definition of an economic slump. A layoff isn’t a statistic published in The Denver Post; it’s food on the table. Rising costs of health care, no matter how slowed down compared to previous years, are dollars that can’t be replaced by a stagnant wage.

I promise to work tirelessly to advocate for my constituents and ensure that all of us participate in the economic recovery. I am already working with Democratic and Republican legislators from both the House and Senate to write commonsense legislation to address the issues you told me about at your doors during the campaign. I look forward to sharing these ideas with you and hearing your thoughts as they go through the legislative process.

I will also be a strong voice in the fight to protect our water as the statewide water plan continues to be drafted, and I will keep conservation issues in focus at the local level. We have big issues to solve like communities losing families because of job losses, and schools facing impossible choices due to tight budgets. These are the tough issues that we endured a long and hard campaign season to address, and your input will be invaluable.

Please know that regardless of which candidate you supported in the November election, I am here to serve you. Feel free to contact me by phone, mail, or email in order share your hopes and concerns. I look forward to hearing your feedback in order to make sure that I best represent all of my constituents.
