Vail Daily letter: Harvey for sheriff
Sadly, domestic violence as a prevalent and devastating social justice issue is once again in the forefront of America’s consciousness due to the abuse endured by Janay Palmar, wife of former Baltimore Raven Ray Rice.
The NFL’s response (of suspending Ray Rice) to the graphic video demonstrates the league’s commitment to addressing domestic and sexual violence. This is particularly significant given that the NFL is an organization that has both the influence and resources to shift the conversation … to change the attitudes toward domestic violence and sexual assault and the meaning of masculinity in our culture. By partnering with domestic violence advocacy program around the U.S., the NFL has the ability to create social change around this issue.
I want to acknowledge the players and sports analysts who, prior to seeing this most recent video, condemned Ray Rice’s behavior. They represent a stark contrast to the otherwise victim-blaming stance that others in the league demonstrated when they failed to meaningfully hold Rice accountable in August.
Domestic violence of the same magnitude occurs in our community, too. The Centers for Disease Control reports that one in three women will become the victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking in her lifetime. In the past year in Eagle County, Bright Future Foundation served our 600 victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. These victims are your neighbors, friends, sisters and daughters.
This election year, we have an opportunity to cast our votes for a candidate who is committed to addressing the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault head on. Daric Harvey, candidate for Eagle County sheriff, has been on the board of directors of the Bright Future Foundation since January 2013. As such, he is a strong advocate for assuring that victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their families are treated with the utmost respect when interfacing with law enforcement. Additionally, Daric compassionately supports all aspects of Bright Future’s prevention, advocacy and crisis intervention and recovery services.
