Vail Daily letter: Harvey for sheriff
A few supporters of James van Beek have insinuated that Daric Harvey insulted Mr. van Beek in a newspaper ad that had a side-by-side comparison of the two sheriff candidates. The ad listed Mr. van Beek’s current job title as “bus driver/dispatcher.” Why are people taking offense to this? Does the ad say that being a bus driver is somehow not admirable? No. The ad merely illustrates the current employment status of each man. The issue goes to qualifications and recent job experience. I cannot see how this can be construed as anything other than what it is — a factual statement which has been supported by Mr. van Beek publicly.
I have been volunteering for Daric Harvey’s campaign for the past several months and I have never heard him make a disparaging remark about his opponent. For one thing, it goes against Daric’s character to do so. He also doesn’t need to stoop to negative campaigning because he has a solid and diverse resume with current, relevant law enforcement experience.
I have a great respect for both candidates. It is not an easy thing to put your hat in the ring in the name of public service and I applaud both gentlemen for doing so. However, when it comes to choosing the person who is to lead the top law enforcement agency in our county, we owe it to ourselves to choose the best, most qualified person for the job. We need to hire someone who can move the Sheriff’s Office forward and who is well versed in modern law enforcement practices. We need someone who can jump in to the role of sheriff without missing a beat.
That someone is Daric Harvey and that is why I am voting for him to be our next sheriff. I encourage you to do the same.
