Vail Daily letter: Harvey for sheriff

Surprising to some, our community has its fair share of challenges. Did you know that Eagle County teens are using alcohol, cocaine, ecstasy and heroin at larger rates than state and national counterparts? Are you shocked to learn that 8 percent of local high school youth have reported to being physically forced to have sexual intercourse when they did not want to (2013 Healthy Kids Colorado Survey)? While you may attribute these needs to ineffective parenting or community norms that celebrate a “party lifestyle,” few can credit these disturbing findings to lack of community prevention services.

Local leaders, including Eagle County sheriff candidate Daric Harvey, are working tirelessly with local agencies to identify and address community needs. In conjunction with his current role as a commander with the Vail Police Department, Daric coordinates the Police Explorers program. Police Explorers aims to build trust among community members and law enforcement entities, and provides free training for young people who are considering a career in law enforcement. Daric has served on the Bright Future Foundation board of directors since January of 2013, helping to prevent domestic violence and offer resources to victims. Daric has been an integral member of the Total Health Alliance, a collaborative of governmental and nonprofit prevention providers focused on substance abuse prevention and mental health promotion, since their founding. Daric has been quick to lend a hand for various community initiatives since long before announcing his candidacy.

I believe that Daric Harvey’s law enforcement experience, commitment to the local community, and genuine interest in supporting youth and families would be an excellent asset to the Eagle County sheriff seat. If you are still deciding who to cast your ballot for in the sheriff’s election, I encourage you to join me in voting for Daric Harvey. He’s the right choice for our kids and our community.
