Vail Daily letter: Harvey for sheriff
As an Eagle County business owner, parent and “local,” I am supporting Vail Police Department Cmdr. Daric Harvey to be our next Eagle County sheriff.
I have been a lifelong Republican, but believe that when the right person presents him or herself, it becomes my duty as a citizen to support that individual. Cmdr. Daric Harvey is that person for Eagle County sheriff. Daric has 18 years of law enforcement experience. He has served as a patrol officer, narcotics investigator, SWAT team member, violent crimes detective, sergeant and patrol lieutenant. Since 2012, he has served as a commander with the Vail Police Department.
I am a partner/owner of the Gore Range Brewery in Edwards. I want a sheriff that will be engaged, professional and present within the business community. Election year politicking by suddenly appearing at business social events is transparently offensive. In my conversations with Daric Harvey he has expressed the desire in providing responsible alcohol serving classes to businesses through his Sheriff’s Department. We have also discussed business safety ideas and the effects of new businesses like retail marijuana shops and their possible impact in the community.
As the very proud parent of two children, their safety and happiness is paramount. Cmdr. Harvey established the Police Explorers program in Eagle County of which my son is a member. The mentoring and positive relations my son has received have made an impact on him, but also our family. Daric speaks glowingly of his own school-aged children (three) and about the commitment his family agreed to make when he becomes sheriff. Fact: The role of sheriff pays less than that of his current position as a Vail Police commander.
“Local,” “long-time resident,” etc., are terms often used to lay claim to a certain distinction in our county. I believe that if you love this place, pay taxes (property or sales) or rent, own a mountain bike or fly rod, then you deserve to call yourself a “local.” Daric owns a home in Gypsum and like so many of us came to raise his family in a special place where safety and quality of life have real value. Cmdr. Daric Harvey dedicates more time to serving this community than most anyone I know. He may not be a very good golfer, but he is an excellent public servant.
Republicans, Democrats, independents, business owners, parents and “locals” — Eagle County needs a change in the Sheriff’s Office. Twelve years is long enough and for this job, experience is required.
Cmdr. Daric Harvey is the right person at the right time.
