Vail Daily letter: Lift tickets too pricey
In reference to Scott Miller’s recent article “Rooms may not fill for Christmas season,” he mentions various economic reasons for the lack of visitors to the Vail area. One thing he does not mention is the “elephant in the room” — that is, the extremely high cost of lift tickets by Vail Resorts. $150 for a day ticket is by far the highest in the country and as a skier from the East Coast to the Vail area about every other year for the last 30 years, I have plenty of choices and will be patronizing the other many fine areas in Colorado and especially in Utah.
Certainly a company like Vail Resorts wants to make as much profit as they can and has a right to charge “what the market will bear.” However, I believe their over-priced tickets are keeping visitors like myself and others from patronizing them and hurting the local lodging and related businesses that cater to the skiing visitors.
