Vail Daily letter: My choices are …

As an independent voter, I tend to focus on the issues that have the most impact on my immediate community and surroundings. Over the last 10 years, I have spent a lot of time in the ranching community, working with the Healthy Foods Coalition, the Eagle County Conservation District and now, on my family’s ranch up the Brush Creek drainage. I have focused on the possibility of community-wide sustainability.

Sustainability is a term that encompasses many of the values that we hold dear and true to us here in Colorado. I have found that Diane Mitsch Bush, Kathy Chandler-Henry, Ted Archibeque and Kerry Donovan understand the core sustainable values that we must strive to preserve. All of these candidates have demonstrated to me personally over the years the desire to preserve and protect the waters that run through our valley, the animals that roam our hills, and the preservation of the access to the endless recreational areas that we so enjoy in this place we call home.

In particular, Rep. Diane Mitsch Bush, by supporting initiatives such as Senate Bill 252 that promotes small hydro and biomass energy generation, has made a commitment to alternative energy generation, thus reducing our dependence on one particular form of energy. These measures and others like them have generated thousands of dollars that go directly back into the economy in the form of wages to local workers and materials purchased from local companies.

A vote for these candidates is a vote to enhance the lifestyle and environment that we all enjoy here in Eagle County.
