Vail Daily letter: Nordic race in Leadville
Start your year off right, setting a New Year’s resolution of trying a new sport or kick starting your Nordic ski training! What a better way to celebrate the success of your resolution with signing up for the annual Leadville Loppet Nordic Ski Race!
Join us Sunday, Feb. 21 for our lucky No. 13 Leadville Loppet high-altitude Nordic ski race! The Loppet serves as the annual fundraiser for Leadville’s historic Mineral Belt Trail. The race course travels through the rolling forested terrain of Colorado Mountain College’s trail network, leads racers on to our Mineral Belt, climbs and descends abandoned rail grades left from Leadville’s mining era, and returns to the finish where we warm up at the award ceremony with soups and chili galore! We will also host a free wax clinic provided by Leadville’s own Tim Hill of Alpine Ski & Sport on Saturday, Feb. 20, 6-8 p.m. in the Cloud City Ski Hut at Dutch Henri Hill!
Registration is currently open online for classic and freestyle 44K, 22K, & 10K distances — plus a 5K and 1K fun race where costumes are encouraged! You may find further race info and register by visiting the events page of our Mineral Belt website; http://www.mineralbelttrail.com. Registration will close Feb. 20 at 8 p.m.
The 2016 Loppet allows the Leadville and Lake County community to continue to preserve our mining history, highlight our scenic value and provide recreational opportunities for all on The Mineral Belt Trail!
