Vail Daily letter: Refugee scenario
Vatican City, officially Vatican City-State, is a walled enclave within the city of Rome, with an area of approximately 44 hectares (110 acres), and a population of 842.
It is the smallest internationally recognized independent state in the world by both area and population.
The independent city-state came into existence in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and Italy.
According to the terms of the treaty, the Holy See has “full ownership, exclusive dominion, and sovereign authority and jurisdiction” over the city-state. (Reference: Wikipedia)
In view of present controversies concerning, one, church and state separation and sovereign-nation status; two, illegal immigration (in particular: Latino migration to the U.S.); three, the Catholic Church’s pronouncements on unfettered capitalism and its associate environmental damage; four, the social and economic injustices attendant to overpopulation in combination with capital and labor practices; one might ponder the following hypothetical scenario.
Millions of undocumented immigrants from Eastern Mediterranean war zones walk toward Rome and illegally enter the sovereign nation of Vatican City and demand residence.
What would one suppose the governing authority response of the sovereign nation of Vatican City to this demand would be to these illegal immigrants?
