Vail Daily letter: Van Beek for sheriff

I’m throwing in my views from 22 years of experience as a local, statewide and federal criminal prosecutor and my voice in support of James van Beek as our new Eagle County sheriff.

As both a former felony prosecutor here and current defense attorney, I’ve known James over the course of almost 15 years. He’s known and respected by both prosecutors and defense attorneys alike. He’s regarded by all to be a thorough, highly professional, firm and fair law enforcement officer. In other words, just what we need for our new Eagle County sheriff.

Moreover, James has a long history locally, a deputy sheriff having policed about every square foot of Eagle County over 20 years, including the Basalt area, and he understands local community good-policing standards from that experience, which is important. He’s also a proven and dedicated community leader, serving on HOA, government and nonprofit boards locally. He’s a strong family man, too, supported by his spouse, Carrie, and two sons.

And, without doubt, James stands tall in my eyes for his volunteered military service overseas, in harm’s way in Kosovo and Afghanistan, serving as a military/police advisor there for our U.S. military and government, working with and training foreign military and police departments to protect their own local communities from invasion and war.

As I see it, this vote is about action and leadership. We should ask a lot of our lead law enforcement officer — including leading — and James van Beek has the right stuff to lead. I believe James is the right, proven man, and at the right time to fill this very important position. Let’s all support James van Beek for sheriff and see what he can do for our community.
