Vail Daily letter: ‘Yes’ on Amendment 66
I am writing about the importance of voting “yes” on Amendment 66. This amendment will increase state income taxes to fund public schools. Currently, Colorado ranks 48th lowest in overall state income tax collections in the country. Everyone loves having lower income taxes; however, Colorado is the 40th-lowest state in per pupil spending for education in the country! Our state has set some rigorous standards for education, but there is no funding to implement them. We are far below the national average on the amount of money we spend on education.
Amendment 66 is an investment in the future of the kids of Colorado. Schools can hire more teachers, provide more one-on-one time, free full-day kindergarten and more up-to-date technology in the classrooms. Teachers will have the tools to help our kids excel.
Coloradans need to prioritize how well our kids are educated and look long-term at creating a competitive work force. We want businesses to relocate to Colorado not move out. The reality is, businesses look at the quality of the school districts in each state and our state is lagging way behind.
Take the time to read about Amendment 66. Take the time to understand how this amendment has a framework in place for the accountability and transparency your tax dollars deserve. Are we seeing more bears because there are more bears on the valley floor, or because we’re all spending more time at home? It could be a bit of both.
