Vail Daily letter: ‘Yes’ on Skier Building

Moments after being sworn in as a new Avon town councilor on Nov. 18, I cast my vote to hold a special election on the question of using certificates of participation to finance the purchase of the Skier Building as Avon’s new town hall. I welcomed the opportunity to hear from the voters and consider the perspective of opponents and proponents alike. We are lucky to have residents and second-home owners willing to lend their expertise to analyze the facts and offer their opinions.

I think it is important for all of us — including our local newspaper — to be careful to distinguish fact from opinion. In my view, Don Rogers’ editorial on Jan. 2 is full of opinions which are not supported by the facts. Yes, it is implicit that an editorial is an opinion piece, but that doesn’t absolve the writer from making statements based on hearsay and anecdote.

Having looked hard at all sides of the issue, I am convinced that the purchase of the Skier Building as approved by the Avon Town Council is a great opportunity for our town. I believe the facts back up my conclusion that it is the ideal location, the building is structurally sound, the purchase price is reasonable, it is a prudent financial decision for a municipal building, and there are much better ways to utilize the existing town hall site to enhance the Avon experience for residents, business owners and visitors.

Please review the Skier Building Referendum Fact Sheet at and join me in voting “yes” on the referendum.
