Vail Daily letter: A great evening

“This is the best day of my whole entire summer! First I loved the bungee trampoline the most and then I got to have whipped cream on my dessert!”

Oh, the summer pleasures of childhood! Thank you, Vail Resorts, for your incredible generosity and commitment to helping kids in our community. Seventy Buddies enjoyed a terrific evening at Adventure Ridge last week, compliments of Vail Resorts and the great staff who took care of us all evening.

“When we went on the ropes course, my Buddy said, ‘We have to stay low,’ and I said, ‘You tell me to say ‘yes’ to new adventures. Let’s do it!” She (mentor) was pretty scared, but she went all the way to the top and I was proud of her.

Mentor or be mentored, and the experience is full of lessons!

As kids gobbled a delicious spread of barbecue beef, chicken breast, a variety of salads, and yummy fruit cobbler, also contributed by Vail Resorts, I asked one of our Senior Buddies what the Buddy Mentor program means to him. “I try to be an example to my Buddy that hard work pays off. We work on small goals and celebrate victories together. I think about my own dad and people who had an influence on me, and I want to give some of that back. Being a Buddy Mentor feels good.”

Amid giggles, gleeful shouts, lots of encouragement, and a few raindrops, Buddies and their Mentors flew through some of best views in the valley on the Adventure Ridge zip line. “We did the zip line three times and the ropes course and the climbing wall, and we saw a weasel!”

Buddy Mentors is a program of Bright Future Foundation, based on the national Big Brother/Big Sister model of mentorship, building consistent and trusting local relationships. We have found that good mentoring relationships are a product of doing and accomplishing things together, having fun together and spending time together. We need Buddy Mentors! If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Buddy Mentor, and you are at least 21 years old, contact the Bright Future Foundation at 970-763-7204.

On behalf of our Buddy Mentors our Junior Buddies, and everyone at Bright Future Foundation, thank you, Vail Resorts! We couldn’t have asked for a better evening!
