Vail Daily letter: Asking for your vote

My name is Kevin Kottenstette and I am running for the School Board.

I have been teaching for over 30 years in Eagle County. I believe that all children in Eagle County deserve a great education.

I may have been misunderstood, or worse misrepresented and misquoted. Some people have stated to me that some in the Hispanic community culturally don’t value education.

I completely disagree with that statement, but in the remote chance it were at all true, then we need to change that so all in our society understand the importance of a good education. I have seen some of our children in this valley soar to great things with the education they have received. I would love to see all children get a great education, and not separate the white children from any others. If this is what you call a school of choice then let it be, but don’t let my tax dollars go to funding such a school.

We all can make up some excuses for what is going on in this county, but the numbers don’t lie — 94 percent white is not a coincidence. As a society we need not seek out a great education just for the privileged.

I am proud of the children who come from well-off families, but our society will be better off when we help the less fortunate in their desire to prosper.

My hope is to bring innovative ideas to some policies with new eyes, challenge old assumptions, and have the opportunity to share my perspective as a former teacher with my fellow board members. I know that I will be a part of a strong team, and the School Board will take a lot of collaboration. Respect for one another tends to be very effective. The School Board may be small and local, but I will represent the most important thing, our children, all our children. For the most part, board members are not career education professionals, but in my case I have been an educator for over 30 years. My wife has worked in the district for the same amount of time, and now my son is working his fifth year as a teacher.

I will serve as a bridge between lifelong educators and local communities. I hope to strengthen the communication between staff and community, and work closely with your board chair and your superintendent to better understand district and board responsibilities. I wish to collaborate with the superintendent to improve our school district. This county has been my home for 33 years. My wife and I have raised two sons, and both are graduates of Eagle Valley High School.

This is a new chapter for me, and I believe it will be a positive one.

I know we have great teachers, and I know first hand how hard they work. I loved teaching and loved to watch the children in this valley grow up.

As a board member I would like to think I could continue to help this great community.
