Vail Daily letter: Asking for your vote

My name is Kevin Kottenstette and I am running for Eagle County School Board. For those who know me, you know my dedication to our school district and desire to do right by our kids. For those who don’t know me, allow me to introduce myself.

This county has been my home for 33 years. My wife and I have raised two boys and both of our sons are graduates of Eagle Valley High School. My passion for education is lifelong and I have been an educator in the Eagle County school district for over 30 years. My wife has worked in the district for the same amount of time and I am proud to say that my son is now in his fifth year as a teacher in the District. I recently retired from teaching, but realized that I wanted to have the opportunity to give back to the Eagle County community that has given me so much.

With my background as a lifelong educator and parent whose children were raised in Eagle County Schools, I have the ability to be a bridge between multiple communities. I hope to strengthen the communication between staff and community and work closely with your board chair and your superintendent to better understand district and board responsibilities.

My hope is to bring sharp questions, innovative ideas and fresh energy to the Eagle County School Board. With my years of experience as a local educator, I am poised to challenge old assumptions and hope to have the opportunity to share my perspective with my fellow board members. I know that I will be a part of a strong team, and together we will be able to continue strengthening core priorities such as teaching students the basic subjects like reading, writing and math while simultaneously maintaining a safe environment for our children and attracting and retaining the most talented and caring teachers we can. I will work from a position of mutual respect for my colleagues, parents and the children of district. Our district is a small and local one, and uniquely suited to be a great educational experience for our children.

I know we have great teachers, and I know how hard they work first hand. I loved teaching and loved to watch the children in this valley grow up. This is a new chapter for me, and I believe it will be a positive one.

My name is Kevin Kottenstette and I would be honored to have your support for Eagle County School Board this November.
