Vail Daily letter: Asking for your vote
My name is Mary Cotton, and I am asking for your vote for the Eagle County Schools Board of Directors, District C.
I moved to our beautiful valley in 1987, and my husband Bill and I are raising our children here. Rebecca (BMHS ’13), Ethan (BMHS ’14), and Sarah (BMHS ’17) have attended Eagle County Schools since 2000. I have volunteered for our children, our teachers, and our schools for the past 15 years, and hope to use my experience to serve all students in Eagle County.
If elected, I will work with the board and administration to continue supporting our teachers as they raise the standards of excellence in our classrooms. Without doubt, children thrive in our public schools. Last year’s graduates from EVHS and BMHS enrolled in the United States Naval Academy, Cambridge University and Yale University among other excellent schools. We need to continue our efforts to recruit and retain exceptional teachers so all of our children can achieve their dreams.
Devastating budget cuts impacted our schools beginning in 2010, leading to reductions in force and increased class sizes. Finally, school funding is beginning to increase. Last month, however, the Colorado State Supreme Court ruled in favor of the infamous “negative factor” for education funding. In a nutshell, this decision means our state legislators may cut increases to education funding to balance the budget.
I believe my experience with school finance during difficult funding times will be an asset if I am elected to the board. With a compelling strategic plan in place, I believe we can invest taxpayer dollars in meaningful ways for our students and teachers while we work together to find a solution to education funding for our schools.
Your mail-in ballot is arriving this week; please don’t leave it sitting on your kitchen counter! I appreciate your vote for “Cotton for Kids.”
