Vail Daily letter: History tour thanks
The Eagle County Historical Society’s history tour of the Diamond Star ranch was a huge success. Nearly 150 people turned out to learn the history of the ranch and about the dryland farmers who ranched on Bellyache. Some even got to witness an actual cattle drive.
The success of the tour is owed to the generosity of a number of supporters. The Diamond S Ranch owners graciously allowed us to stage a public tour on their private property. Colorado Mountain Express did a superb job providing transportation up to the restored buildings on Bellyache. Eagle Valley Library District archivist Jaci Spuhler helped to gather photos and history. Comerford Insurance Agency, Ed and Kristin Woodland, and Donna Spinelli provided additional financial support.
A cadre of very good volunteers for the ECHS volunteered their time for a long day where duties ranged from checking in guests, acting as museum docents and offering interpretive information at the designated historic sites. Jack Oleson, Bob Cowden and their friend Pete Gunderson who shared their historical knowledge and humor.
The tour participants were enthusiastic, curious and supportive. This event proved to be the most successful fundraiser ever for the ECHS. We look forward to sharing more local history at future events.
