Vail Daily letter: Outstanding World Cup

The Audi Birds of Prey at Beaver Creek is known as one of the most challenging stops on the Audi FIS World Cup circuit. For U.S. Ski Team athletes, it’s the event they look forward to all year. It’s their only domestic event of the season, and every athlete relishes hearing the home crowd cheering them on as they come into the Red Tail finish. Their parents, friends and fans can watch them race with the world’s best on the same hills they grew up on.

This year was another exceptional event. Compliments abounded from athletes about the course, the snow and the people who made the event possible. It was an ideal venue to watch Ted Ligety claim his second giant slalom win of the season on live national television. Perhaps the most telling statement of the weekend’s success came from FIS race director Guenter Hujara — he said that Beaver Creek had created a “ski racing paradise.”

On behalf of our U.S. Ski Team athletes, I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to the Vail Valley Foundation, Beaver Creek Resort and the entire Vail Valley for another outstanding World Cup. Thank you, Beaver Creek, for making this such a memorable event.
