Vail Daily letter: Rickstrew for CMC board

I am writing in support of Jay Rickstrew for the contested Colorado Mountain College board of trustees seat from West Garfield County. Everyone in the CMC service district has the opportunity to vote by mail-in ballot in this election, including those of us in Eagle County. I have known Jay for three years while we have both volunteered as members of the CMC Foundation board. He has plenty of governance experience, including many years on the Garfield RE-2 School District board of directors, including six years as board president. He is dedicated to education and successful at building consensus. He has the background and skills needed to deal with the complex issues facing higher education in the CMC service district. Jay understands how boards operate and respects the legal authority they are granted. He can set clear goals for the CMC board of trustees and accomplish them without being a micro-manager. He believes in letting administrators delegate their responsibilities, and will hold the CMC president accountable for the successful management of the college. He has worked for four years as a coach for the Rifle High School boys basketball team, so he knows how to take the correct course of action while under pressure. He is a family man with a wife and two children, and has a successful career as a banker in Rifle. He has been a lifelong resident of the CMC district, growing up in the Carbondale and New Castle area and now living in Rifle. Through his experience on the CMC Foundation board, he understands the entire 12,000-square-mile CMC district.

Jay will attend the meetings of the CMC board of trustees, and will not miss board meetings and critical votes, as his opponent, the incumbent, has done too often. His objective, which I share along with all of you, is the success of the students at Colorado Mountain College, while the institution continues to thrive with a financially sound structure, strong administrative personnel and good morale among faculty and staff.

Please cast your vote for Jay Rickstrew for CMC board of trustees. He will represent us well!
