Vail Daily letter: Stand by Udall, Donovan

I am amazed at the absolute nonsense that is showing up in political campaign ads; lots of twisted lies. It would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic.

Mark Udall is no more against hunting than I am, and the only thing that keeps me out of the woods is my old broken body. Mark comes from a long line of Udalls that understand the value of the federal lands, not for ripping apart with access roads, mines, wells, dams and diversions, but for recreation, which is the lifeblood of our Colorado West Slope. If you want to look at real job growth, tally up those in the recreation industry, and they are healthy outdoor jobs. Mark supports recreation, and it is our least damaging option for producing more jobs.

We have a beautiful state. Why should we tear it apart for narrow exploitive interests? The Koch brothers have enough mining interests elsewhere. We don’t need to let them buy off our state.

I have a postcard that implies that Kerry Donovan says, “Gasoline is murder.” Kerry’s family’s business is one of the biggest gasoline consumers in Eagle County. She understands our oil dependence. She just doesn’t want to see our beautiful mountain lands like the Thompson Divide ripped apart when better immediate options are available for oil elsewhere, and alternative energy sources like solar and wind are coming online, creating lots of jobs. These non-polluting energy sources will allow us to protect our mountain lands, our recreational lifestyle, and our transportation and heating options as well.

To put the shoe on the other foot, imagine what happens if people like Cory Gardner get elected. East slope cities will be given a green light to expand out of control and our rivers like the Eagle will be sucked dry by trans-mountain diversions. Wilderness lands will be chopped up like they were 150-plus years ago by the miners. And we will end up sitting in one big sad mess.

Let’s not kill the goose that lays the golden egg. Stand by Udall and Donovan.
