Vail Daily letter: Supposed to be public
The road closure article in (the Sept. 1) Vail Daily was excellent as it exposed the problems with the road closures and gave prospective from both sides. One of the major problems with the road closures is the restricted access during big-game hunting seasons. This is especially hard on the elderly and handicapped. The Forest Service’s one-size-fits-all approach is short sighted. This could be improved greatly if they would develop a program to have seasonal opening of some roads, especially for the elderly and handicapped. The quote at the end of the article is unfortunately too true when Brian says, “Closing these roads to vehicles has made it available to only the healthy and wealthy.” The forests are supposed to be public land — why is so much access denied?
