Vail Daily letter: Tenuous correlation

Don: I'm late getting back to you on your terrific editorial of July 3, but I liked most of your comments and have some extra thoughts: You have apparently done much more homework than most of your media brethren, and recognize that throughout geologic time the earth has undergone tremendous temperature changes with many ice ages and warming periods (where we are now). We may be having some slight warming now, but the correlation with CO2 is tenuous at best, and our historic global temperature variations correlate much better with solar activity. Even though increased CO2 in the atmosphere will benefit the increasing population on the earth by increasing agriculture productivity, we should be planning for the ultimate replacement of our hydrocarbon fuels as those sources decline.
