Vail Daily letter: ‘Yes’ on 5A
As a professionally licensed architect, resident, and owner of multiple properties within Eagle-Vail, I would recommend community members vote in favor of the proposed tax increase.
In the most simplistic terms, I would equate the existing community facilities to a 30-year-old vehicle with 295,000 miles. While it was a solid car when you bought it and can still get you from place to place, it now belches black smoke, burns a quart of oil every two weeks, averages about 10 miles per gallon, and the eight-track tape deck has stopped working long ago.
The planned replacement facilities, while not glamorous by any stretch of imagination, are sorely needed because it simply makes no sense to continue to invest the monies necessary to maintain and bring the existing buildings up to currently adopted building codes. For anyone who questions this fact, I truly would recommend they schedule a visit for a tour of the day-to-day operations areas.
The proposed location of the clubhouse on the valley floor, while not perfect, would allow for a synergy of uses central to the golf course, park, playground, pool, tennis, sport courts, pavilion, lake and community garden. This, in turn, could potentially generate additional revenues while reducing operational costs.
While there seems to be seems to be some confusion as to the amount financial impact each property owner may feel, it is my understanding from my personal involvement in the legal processes, that it will cost each property owner approximately $55 per year for $100,000 in assessed value; or about $250 per year in additional property taxes for the average homeowner.
Putting aside the conspiracy theories as to the Eagle-Vail “political machine,” I would wholeheartedly recommend that my neighbors in Eagle-Vail please join me and my family in voting yes on 5A.
