Vail Daily letter: ‘Yes’ on Amendment 66
When filling out your ballot this fall, we encourage you to vote “yes” on Amendment 66. As a community and state, we should support funds for education, which is the best investment we can make in our future.
The children of Colorado deserve the opportunity to have a quality education and realize their potential. Quality schools and teachers strengthen communities and our economy, and prepare students for a competitive world.
This amendment will give the voters better transparency with the ability to track pre-K through 12 public-school spending. We are always supportive of more money for education because we feel it is the most important pillar of a healthy society. However, we feel that school districts need to be accountable for the money the state has given them from taxes. Amendment 66 accomplishes both.
Your vote for Amendment 66 would fund key education investments including improved technology in the classroom, teacher training, and smaller class sizes; early childhood education funding including full-day kindergarten for all children; increased support for at-risk students; and greater transparency on school spending.
Amendment 66 would increase tax rates from 4.63 to 5 percent on the first $75,000 of income and to 5.9 percent for income above $75,000. Median income households would pay approximately $133 more per year. This is an investment opportunity in our community that we cannot afford to miss. Please vote “yes” on Amendment 66!
