Vail Daily letter: ‘Yes’ to Avon public safety facility

In safe towns like Avon, we don’t give much thought to police.

We may give them more attention when we’re pushing the speed limit or driving home after a drink, but 74 percent of the people who participated in the 2015 Avon community survey expressed satisfaction with police services, and 93 percent said they feel safe in their neighborhood.

On April 2, the Avon Police Department became the smallest Colorado law enforcement agency and the only department on the Western Slope to become nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. This is a big deal — it’s the gold standard of public safety.

If you’re on the fence about whether to vote “yes” for a new Avon police station, requiring no new taxes or tax increases, please stop by the police station in the basement of town hall to see the condition of the current facility. A couple of deputies work in a closet. I’m not kidding — it’s a closet.

Please vote “yes” for the new Avon Police Station. Your ballot must be received at Town Hall by May 3. You can mail it (postage paid envelope is provided with the ballot) or drop it off in person.
