10K at 10,000 Feet in Vail Sunday

Daily Staff Report
Vail, CO Colorado

VAIL, Colorado ” The fourth event in the La Sportiva Vail Mountain Trail Running series, the 10K at 10,000 feet on Sunday, requires runners to take a free ride up the Eagle Bahn Gondola for the race start which is at the summit of Vail Mountain.

In order to make the 9 a.m. start time, runners must be on the gondola by 8:30 a.m.

The entire race course is above 9,000 feet with the high point at nearly 11,000 feet. The average grade is 7 percent with an elevation gain of 1,172 feet. There are two aid stations, one at 2.3 miles and one at four miles. Terrain includes service roads, dirt paths, and single-track trail.

“This year it will be prettier than ever ” the flowers are stunning right now,” local runner Anita Ortiz said. “You can run a 10K anywhere ” this race is beautiful and it’s a great challenge. Start out slowly, because if you go out like you’re running at 6,000 feet, it’s gonna kill you. Give your lungs and legs time to figure out (the altitude) and then you’ll be good.”

Parking is free at the Lionshead parking structure. Spectators can take the gondola to the summit, or hike up the mountain.

Race entry is $25 in advance, and $35 on race day. Register through http://www.active.com through today, by fax to VRD, or in person at the VRD offices from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday. Every race participant will receive a goody bag, a commemorative T-shirt, post-race refreshments, results, and the chance to win random prizes. Prizes from La Sportiva will be presented to overall and age group winners.
