Allan, Bossow are Queens of the Mountain

The Vail Mountain School seniors had hoped to enter in the Junior division.

“When we got there, there were, I think, only two other junior teams so they had to put us with the older women,” Allan said. “Nobody really expected anything out of us.”

That changed very quickly over the course of 48 hours Saturday and Sunday. The two high-schoolers ended up winning the King of the Mountain Women’s BB division title.

“Yeah, I was definitely surprised with how it came out,” Bossow said. “At the beginning of the tournament, I knew a few people in the A-division and we could play with them. They’re tough competition and we can play with them pretty well so that gave me some hope, but it was definitely nerve-wracking.”

Allan and Bossow went undefeated in Saturday’s pool play and advanced to Sunday’s double-elimination final against Wendy McCann of Northglenn and Beth Sokolowski of Highlands Ranch. McCann and Sokolowski won the first match, but since Allan and Bossow had won their encounter during pool play, there would be a rematch for the crown.

And there was no doubt in their third meeting of the tournament.

“Tiffany and I kind of treated that one as a warmup match,” Bossow said. “Afterwards, we decided, “You know what? No more horsing around.’ Before, we were kind of laid-back because we had already played that team and beaten them once. I guess we figured we could do it again. And once they beat us, it kind of showed us that they could play. Then we proved to them that we could do it.”

When Allan and Bossow play in VMS blue and white, the usual routine is that Allan sets and Bossow slams it home. But the two-person, grass game allowed the two to showcase their complete game. Allan impressed with her digging and had her fair share of kills. Meanwhile, Bossow showed her aplomb from behind the serving line and in the passing game.

“We definitely learned a lot about court sense,” Allan said. “In high school, obviously, there are five different people on the court to cover you. It’s so much different. It’s you and your partner and you’re only dependent on her. I wouldn’t say that it’s any quicker. You just take on so much more responsibility so you learn so much more about the game and your own skills and weaknesses.”

“It definitely gives us a little more confidence that Tiffany and I can play well together, “Bossow said. “Before we knew we could play well together but not that well.”

Longtime local volleyball player Monty McBride coached Allan and Bossow.

Sunday’s win adds to both of their King of the Mountain resumes. Last year, Bossow, along with VMS teammate Maggie Haslee, took third in the U-17’s doubles division. Allan played last year with Battle Mountain’s Jenna Gilbert and qualified for the U-17’s playoffs.

Expect Allan and Bossow to be back next year. Of course, like this year, there’s likely to be a change in plans. The duo will be moving up to the Women’s A division.
