An off day for the Devils

PALISADE – The Eagle Valley softball team started out strong against Palisade High School Saturday, but things took a turn for the worst in the sixth inning of the first game.The Devils lost its doubleheader, going down 8-3 in the first game and 11-7 in the second.”In the first game we were ahead until the bottom of the sixth,” said Eagle Valley coach Brad Stiles. “They led off the inning with a double, then we got an out. Then, they got a single and a couple of walks. Then, another single, another walk …”After Eagle Valley held its 3-0 lead, Palisade scored all eight runs in the sixth inning. “We still get a little nervous when we’re getting to the end of games and we’re ahead,” Stiles said. “We put ourselves into a hole.”Kayla Phillips hit 2-for-2 in the first game with a single and a triple.The Devils picked it up in the second game, ending the first inning, 2-2. Then Palisade started to inch ahead and increased its lead to 11-4 in the top of the seventh when Eagle Valley finally answered with three more runs.”It was too little, too late,” Stiles said. In the second game, Caitlan Schmidt was 3-for-4 with a double and Morgan Strakbein and Shannon Buhler each were 2-for-4.”We had an off day,” Stiles said. “We didn’t’ play near as well as we have been. Hopefully we’ll come out a little more upbeat and ready to start a new streak.”The Devils take on Rifle on the road at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
