Area gymnasts strong at state meet
Five local gymnasts from Alpine Gymnastics Academy qualified to the USAG Levels 7 and 8 State Championships, rounding out their competitive seasons.
Level 7 competitors Shelby Wright, 11, Kelly Adams, 13, and Taylor Biegler , 12, ended their competitive season at the state meet in Boulder on March 20. Wright had the strongest showing for Alpine with a season-high, all-around score of 34.90.
“This was the first year of USAG optional competition for each of these girls, and I’m very proud that they all competed well enough throughout the season to qualify to the state championship meet.” said head coach Heidi Koch.
The Level 8 State meet took place last weekend, and although both Lani Bruntz, 14, and Lauren Biegler, 15, qualified for the meet, Bruntz was unable to compete due to an injury.
Biegler gave a strong showing with an all-around score of 34.725, which ranked her among the top Level 8 gymnasts in Colorado and qualified her to represent Colorado at the Region III Championships in Dallas in mid-April.
“We are in, what I perceive to be the toughest region in the United States,” Koch said.
“Some of the athletes Lauren will be competing against include gymnasts from Bela Karolyi’s gym, Bart Connor and wife Nadia Comanchi’s gym, and Kurt Thomas Gymnastics Academy.”
Last year, Biegler missed placing high enough to qualify for the regional meet by one-tenth of a point.
