ASPEN — A halftime reality check helped bring the Aspen girls lacrosse team back from spring break.

Locked in a back-and-forth 6-6 tie with rival Battle Mountain on Wednesday afternoon, the Skiers broke out with six consecutive goals in the second half and an eventual 12-8 win over the visiting Huskies at Aspen School District Stadium.

“After the first half, we kind of had a reality check,” Aspen head coach Jessica Owings said. “We really needed to get the draw, have possession. We needed to get the tempo and momentum back on our side.”

The momentum swing for the Skiers came right after Battle Mountain’s Mabry Gentry scored to give the Huskies a 7-6 lead as play began in the second half.

Aspen co-captain Paige Johnson, after a long run, scored to tie the game 7-7.

With 13 minutes to play in the 25-minute second half, Kelsey Fitzgerald put the Skiers in front for good.

Immediately after taking the lead, Madi Cheo and Mackenzie Miller each scored twice for the Skiers as they bounced back for the victory in their first action since last week’s spring break.

Brook Pisani, Maggie McGuire and Juliette Woodrow also scored for the Skiers.

Battle Mountain (4-3) collected two goals apiece from Gentry, Haley Frischholz and Anna Trombetta.

Maggie Berger and Marti Schmidt also scored in the game at Aspen, played under threatening skies but with no snow or rain. A brief shower ended just before the teams took to the turf field for pregame warmups Wednesday afternoon.

The game started in typical Aspen-Vail fashion with each resort team battling to one-up the other team.

Schmidt scored the game’s first goal to give Battle Mountain a 1-0 edge just 14 seconds into the contest, shocking the small contingent of home fans.

Then Cheo scored her first goal for Aspen, producing a 1-1 tie — one of seven ties in the game.

After Boronski scored for Aspen, Trombetta potted yet another matching goal for the Huskies.

The teams continued to trade goals and ties until the 5-5 halftime break and Aspen’s reality check.

The Battle Mountain girls will play again Saturday — 11 a.m. at Overland in Aurora.
