Aspen Highlands uphill returns Saturday

Aspen Times Staff Report
Vail, CO Colorado

ASPEN, Colorado ” Aspenites have long had a penchant for going uphill on the ski slopes, as well as down. They’ll have another chance to prove their mettle on Saturday at Aspen Highlands.

The second uphill race of the winter season (the Summit for Life event on Aspen Mountain kicked things off Dec. 1) will take racers up one of two courses for the annual Highlands Uphill.

The merely fit may opt for the Recreational Route, which takes uphillers from the base of Highlands to the Merry-Go-Round restaurant at midmountain. The Enduro Route continues upward beyond the restaurant to the top of Olympic Bowl, then drops back down to the Merry-Go-Round.

Start time for Enduro racers is 6:45 a.m. (isn’t it still dark then?) and will cover 3 miles and a vertical gain of 2,850 feet. Recreational racers hit the start line at 7 a.m. for a 2-mile race with 1,900 feet of vertical gain.

Registration is $25 in advance and $35 on race day. Register in advance at the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC) or Red Brick Arts and Recreation Center or online at Pick up the race packet on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the ARC, 0861 Maroon Creek Road.

Race day registration takes place from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. at the Highlands ticket office. Participants must also stop at the ticket office to pick up a timing chip. The chips must be returned at the finish line (lost or unreturned chips result in a $100 fee).

Racers may use snowshoes, traction devices, track skis, telemark skis or alpine touring gear.

Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in both the Enduro and Recreational divisions and each finisher will receive an event medal.
