Austrian skier retires because of knee injuries
INNSBRUCK, Austria ” Austrian skier Christine Sponring retired Thursday, her career cut short after a series of knee injuries.
The 25-year-old Sponring was sidelined for the World Cup season after tearing ligaments and a meniscus while training in the offseason. She won a silver medal in the super-combi at the 2001 World Championships.
“After this injury, the last in a long series, it’s impossible for me to motivate,” Sponring said. “Unfortunately, I am not able to stage another comeback.”
Sponring, who was a junior world slalom champion but didn’t win a World Cup race, tore cruciate ligaments and cartilage in 2003.
