Avalanche U-15’s volleyball finishes 29th in Reno

Daily Staff Writer

The Avalanche 15-and-under volleyball team headed to Reno recently for the Far Western National Qualifier, finishing 29th out of a field of 52 teams.

The team, which is made up entirely of Battle Mountain High School students, is currently ranked 13th in the Rocky Mountain Region.

Going into the qualifier at The Reno Convention Center, the Avalanche was seeded 47th, but moved up nearly 20 spots after three days of volleyball action against top teams from the western United States.

In the first day of competition the team played against the sixth-seeded, 23rd-seeded and 34th-seeded teams.

The girls took third in their pool, and moved to the division-two bracket for the rest of the tournament.

On Day 2, there were six pools with four teams in each pool. The Avalanche went undefeated in pool play and took first place.

Day 3 brought together all the first place teams from the second day of action in a single-elimination tournament. Once again, the team went undefeated and ended up taking first place in Flight 1.

The Avalanche was coached during the regular season by Steve Kidder, but Meghan O’Conner took over coaching duties for the Reno tournament.

Team members included Paige Bennett, Britney Brown, Kendra Havlik, Sydney Nichols, Allie O’Conner, Nicole Penwill and Sarah Simmons.
