The sun beat bright and hot on the competitors at Vail Athletic Field Saturday, but a breeze and a series of clouds blew in just in time for the Women’s Elite division semifinals of the Vail/Avon Lacrosse Shootout.

Team Simeons beat Special Brew, 11-7, in the first semifinal game. The win preserved Team Simeons’ undefeated status in the tournament.

Team Simeons’ Sarah Graham scored the first of her two goals to start the game.

Special Brew struck back with two goals, one from Kristen Loughlin and the other from Brooke McKenzie, who finished the game with a hat trick

Team Simeons proceeded to go on a 4-0 run, and Linsey Welch ended the first half with the first of her two goals.

Team Simeons simply outhustled Special Brew in the second half. Team Simeons won most of the 50/50 balls and possessed the ball for the majority of the game.

Sara Averson, of Team Simeons, scored five goals in the game.

AXIA 8, Team Harrow 5

Team AXIA, having defeated defending-champion Behind the Back earlier in the day, had its toughest competition yet in Team Harrow Saturday.

Team Harrow stunned AXIA by scoring the first goal, but AXIA retaliated with a 4-0 run.

Team Harrow’s Kinsley O’Garrow ended the run with a goal, a result of a penalty away from the ball. That was the last score of the first half.

Team Harrow scored the first goal of the second half, but AXIA came back with three, nearly dashing Team Harrow’s hopes. But Team Harrow played valiantly to the end, led by O’Garrow’s three goals. Kristen Olson and Julie Shank had Team Harrow’s other two goals.

Danielle Gallagher led team AXIA with three goals. Crista Samaras scored two goals and added an assist, Michele DeJuliis scored one goal and had two assists, Kate Graw scored one and Randall Goldsborough-Flynn also scored for AXIA.

“This game against Harrow was the best competition we’ve had so far,” said Erin Kutner, who plays defense for AXIA. “Most of us know each other from high-school or college (competition), so you could hear us laughing out there. We were laughing, but we were going to win.”

Team AXIA will face Team Simeons today in the Women’s Elite championship game at Ford Park at 12:30 p.m.
