Battle Mountain blanks Eagle Valley

CVR BM v. EV FB Sanders KA 11-4-11

GYPSUM – Battle Mountain football has been called a lot of things throughout the years.

Terrible. Awful and so on.

After Friday night’s 54-0 win over Eagle Valley in Gypsum, one can call the Huskies a state-playoff team.

At 9-1, Battle Mountain is playoff-bound for the first time since 1994. The Huskies will get their playoff draw Sunday.

Friday night’s game marked a four-season turnaround from 0-10 in Huskies coach David Joyce’s first season at the school in 2008.

Battle Mountain warmed up on its own field in Edwards, got off the bus in Gypsum took a short stretch and got to work quickly. Blaize Olle broke off a 41-yard run, which set up Zach Guida for a 15-yard scoring run.

On the Huskies’ second possession, Jake Engle hooked up with Reeve Sanders for a 70-yard gain. Olle plunged in from 1 yard out to make it 13-0. After the Huskies’ defense forced another three-and-out, Battle Mountain needed four plays before Guida galloped 56 yards and his second touchdown. Battle Mountain made it 28-0 when Engle hit Eric Weiss for 68 yards, and then Engle called his own number for the final two yards.

Eagle Valley mounted two solid drives in the first half, but those were stalled by penalties. Battle Mountain added to its lead with a drive capped by a 10-yard run from Chris Libertini with 4:29 left in the half. The Huskies finished the second quarter with a 50-yard pass from Engle to Sanders for a 40-0 lead.

It was a quick second half with a running clock, yet the Huskies kept to their scoring ways. Eric Weiss took over the running duties and ended up with a 2-yard scoring run. Battle Mountain continued to pound away with the rushing game with Blaize Olle doing the honors from 9 yards out in the fourth quarter.

Before the game, Eagle Valley honored its two seniors, Dylan Baltierrez and Tyler Epperson.
