Battle Mountain boys alpine ties for first in slalom

SKI COOPER, Colorado ” The Battle Mountain boys alpine team flexed its muscles on the first day of the state meet.
The Huskies placed three skiers in the top 12, and six in the top 26. The strong performance pushed Battle Mountain into a tie for first place with Middle Park with 161 points in the slalom.
Christoph Neiderhauser led the charge for the Huskies. After flying down the course in 38.32 seconds on his first run, Neiderhauser finished with a combined time of 1 minute, 19.04 seconds to claim fourth place.
Zach Ziolkowski and Ike Sheppard also ran fast. Ziolkowski added 55 points to Battle Mountain’s total with a sixth-place finish in 1:19.25. Sheppard wasn’t far behind in 12th.
Battle Mountain showed its depth after its top-three skiers, even if the times didn’t count toward the Huskies’ point total. Davey DeChant continued his stellar season with a 17th-place finish. Nicholas Braun (21st) and Colby Childers (26th) were both in the top 30.
Eagle Valley’s Zach Bailey finished in 28th for the Devils.
Huskies take third in girls’ race
In the girls’ race, the Huskies again led the way for area finishers. Battle Mountain took third place with 144 points. Middle Park won the slalom with 177 points.
Liz Strong paced the Huskies in eighth. Strong’s second run of 39.71 helped her to a combined time of 1:20.76.
Celine Guilmineau was right behind Strong in ninth. Rebecca Hughes added a 30th-place finish with a time of 1:30.56.
Eagle Valley’s Shanna Zoch was the top finisher for the Devils in 27th place.
