SUMMIT COUNTY — Battle Mountain skiing put it all together again on Day 2 of the state ski meet, and the boys are bringing home their first state title since 2001.

The alpine side did what it needed to do — a day after Sands Simonton edged teammate Quintin Cook for a giant-slalom state title, Cook traded the favor, winning Friday’s slalom at Keystone. With Keenan Zopf again in the top 10, the Huskies built on their 16-point edge over host Summit County from the first day of competition.

And then the Nordic gents sealed the deal. Long Battle Mountain’s Achilles’ heel, the thin skis and those on them delivered with a more than necessary performance, finishing third with 155 points, well within range of Aspen (169) and Summit (159) in Friday’s classic race at the Frisco Nordic Center.

Winning Skimeister

In that classic race, Cook finished 19th, which was important for the team as the Huskies’ third scorer. It also was the crowning touch on winning the Skimeister, the award for being the state’s best all-around skier.

The last Eagle County Skimeister was Vail Mountain School’s Eva Spaeh in 2011. The last guy from this area to win it was Vail Christian’s Ian Hamina in 2010, and the last in black and gold was Mitch Hendrix in 2007.

Battle Mountain’s boys finished with 657 points from the two days, well ahead of Summit (622) and Aspen (588). Eagle Valley was fifth with 534.

Summit took the girls’ title with 667 points, followed by Aspen (638) and Battle Mountain (599). Eagle Valley was eighth with 449.
