Battle Mountain girls soccer blanks Summit
FARMER’S KORNER — And to think Battle Mountain girls soccer ordered more jackets with this game in mind.
The Huskies enjoyed the balmy weather on Tuesday afternoon in Farmer’s Korner knocking off Summit County, 4-0.
“It was unbelievable,” Huskies coach David Cope said. “We literally ordered more puffy jackets for the trip to Summit and we left them all in the bag.”
The trip over the pass in girls soccer is usually a voyage to Ice Station Zebra, especially in March. But the Huskies were fine with the usual suspects scoring: Logan Nash, Acacia Ortiz, Emily Cope and Morgan Croke.
Two things came out of this. First, Nash had two helpers. Drawing out the defense, as Nash can, and then finding open teammates, in this case, Cope and Ortiz, has its benefits down the road.
Junior Nicole Lasater also made a big save late to preserve her shutout.
“Goalkeeping is a question mark for us,” coach Cope said. “We’ve been splitting time and both Nicole and Jordan (Glendinning) have been battling it out. We always talk about how the most important number on the scoreboard is zero.”
Cope said that no ultimate decision has been made on the starting job.
Next up for the Huskies (4-0) is a 4 p.m. home game on Saturday against Delta.
Devils win league opener
GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Eagle Valley baseball won its league opener on Tuesday at Glenwood Springs, 11-4.
Wade Ticer went four innings for the win with Sug Ellsworth earning a save for three innings in relief.
“It’s huge,” Devils manager Jesse Meryhew said. “As you know, our season is a sprint. Every game is important. The guys played great and got a win.”
Eagle Valley, led by three hits each from Slater Sabo and Harrison Stevens, scored in every inning but the sixth.
The Devils, 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Slope, are off until Tuesday, when they head to Delta.
