Taking on 17 teams from around the state, the Battle Mountain Girls won the Eagle Valley Invitational varsity track meet Saturday. Coach Jeff Krumlauf said he’s not sure the last time that’s happened, if ever.
The meet started off with back-to-back wins for the Battle Mountain girls in the sprint medley and the 4×8.
“It was just a good feeling. You could tell the kids were having a bunch of fun,” Krumlauf said. “It was really great to see all these kids out there competing and having fun.”
The Eagle Valley girls took second overall, and Battle Mountain boys were sixth.
“It’s a really great rivalry, and to have us come out on top was really sweet,” Krumlauf said. “We still have about four or five weeks in the season, so everything is really coming together the way we want.”
Among the winners for Battle Mountain Girls were Isabelle Courtois, Katie Matarese, Katia Lopez, and Valerie Constein in the sprint medley, Mandy Ortiz, Brooke White, Tesha Olson and Amelia Ortiz in the 4 x 8. Amelia Ortiz also won the mile, while Larose Curry won the Long Jump.
“They did a really great job putting that meet together. It was a really good time even though it was a little chilly and a little wet,” Krumlauf said. “This valley is small, so to see all those kids working hard and competing against each other – congratulating each other at the end – it’s a really cool environment.”
