EAGLE — In a back and forth Foothills rivalry matchup, Battle Mountain hockey lost to Summit County in overtime, 4-3, despite leading the Tigers in shots, 31-21.

With the loss, the Huskies (5-6 overall, 3-5 in the Foothills) remain in the middle of the pack with playoffs looming while the Tigers (3-9-1, 2-6-1) are still in the hunt.

“Today was a big game,” said Huskies coach Dennis Hextall. “We needed that. This is one of the team’s we’ve got to keep down below us, so today didn’t help.”

Opening Momentum

Battle Mountain came out aggressive, scoring the first goal shorthanded three minutes into the game after Jack Lambert stole a Tigers pass and made a move on a defender before backhanding it into the net.

Summit would score the next two goals of the game off the stick of Joe McComb and taking a 2-1 lead into the third period.

Three minutes into the final frame, the Huskies’ Zach Booth scored on a breakaway to tie the game, 2-2. Less than two minutes later, Booth scored a power play goal by flicking it up and over the goalie’s glove, giving the Huskies the 3-2 lead.

“That was a huge individual effort by Zach Booth,” Hextall said. “He basically put the team on his back.”

Sean Costello scored the equalizer for Summit with four minutes remaining in the third period, and Max Clark came up with some key saves down the stretch to send it to overtime.

In a physical rivalry game, Hunter Fox, Tatson Olden, Robby Gruber and Lambert were putting Tigers on the ice all game. Wyatt Alt also harassed the Tigers on defense.

“It’s a fun atmosphere always,” Booth said.

“It’s fun hitting people,” Lambert said. “That’s what hockey’s all about.”

The Huskies play next at Columbine (4-8, 2-5) in a Foothills matchup today.
