EDWARDS — Battle Mountain and Vail Mountain volleyball logged 3-1 days at the Queen of the Mountain Tournament in Edwards on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Coal Ridge ended up winning the nine-team tournament with the Huskies in second place and the Gore Rangers in fourth.

The Huskies welcomed Marti Schmidt and Eva Spangler to the roster on Saturday. The former Vail Christian players had to set the first half of the season due to CHSAA transfer rules.

They were a nice shot in the arm after two losses earlier this week against VMS and Glenwood Springs.

“After the two losses, which were both well played, we needed to refresh the page, which I guess would be the best way to put it in today’s terms,” Huskies coach Jason Fitzgerald said. “We had a great chance to look at Marti and Eva and really ignited us with some new energy. We feel good.”

The Huskies opened the day by winning Pool B with a 25-15, 25-20 win over Aspen and a 25-10, 25-13 victory against Northfield. That moved Battle Mountain into the Gold Pool.

Battle Mountain lost to eventual champion Coal Ridge, 25-22, 25-22, but bounced back against Alamosa for a 25-20, 25-15 win.

The Huskies (8-7) return to league play on Thursday, Oct. 12, at Steamboat Springs.

Gore Rangers impressive

VMS is 11-4 after a good showing on Saturday. The Gore Rangers opened against Coal Ridge, falling, 25-22, 25-16. Class 2A VMS beat 4A Golden, 25-22, 25-20 to finish Pool A 1-1.

That put the Gore Rangers in the Silver Pool, which they won. VMS knocked off 3A Aspen, 25-20, 25-23 and Basalt in three sets.

VMS is on the road in league play next week at DeBeque on Friday, Oct. 13, and at Plateau Valley on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Vail Christian struggled, but had a very competitive match against Golden later in the day.
