Battle Mountain Huskies run past Coal Ridge, 40-16
NEW CASTLE — We don’t want to alarm anyone, but Battle Mountain football is 3-0.
The Huskies seem to be patching lineups together every week, but to their credit, they getting it done as they did on Friday at Coal Ridge, beating the Titans, 40-16.
“I think it shows their character and resiliency,” Huskies coach Cliff Lohrey said. “I told them after the game though, as far as I’m concerned, the season starts Monday. Basalt is going to be the best team we’ve played so far this year.”
Yes, quarterback Miles Levy and the Longhorns await, but the Huskies showed they were able to take their show on the road with big plays being the order of the evening.
Charlie Morrow raced 82 yards to the end zone in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead with Omar Gaspar taking over on the extra-point duties for the injured Nelson Ledezma.
Up 7-6 in the second quarter, Morrow blasted his way for 31 yards and another score. Not to be left, out Cal Masler went for six on a 62-yard draw play.
The Huskies broke it open in the third quarter when Masler went for 50 yards, setting up Morrow for a 26-yard touchdown. Morrow finished with 178 yards, while Masler had 126.
“We’ve got flaws, but anytime you rush for more than 300 yards, your offensive line isn’t perfect, but it’s getting better,” Lohrey said.
Robert Redinger scored on quarterback sneak and Bryce Runckel went 45 yards for the final score.
On defense, coach Lohrey gave postgame kudos to Hector Machigua and Jake Bukovich.
Next up are Homecoming, Levy and Basalt. The Longhorns are 1-2, but their losses are to Rifle and Delta. So how to contain Levy and the air game which is coming to town?
“I think to their credit they’ve built their scheme around (Levy), and he’s earned that right,” Lohrey said. “It’s matter of us playing good special teams and defense to limit their opportunities and capitalize on ours.”
