Battle Mountain leads the way at Eldora slalom

Tough conditions at Eldora and a small field made state berths scarce at last weekend’s high school state-qualifier slalom, but it didn’t stop Battle Mountain, Eagle Valley and the Vail Mountain School from earning tickets to the state championship meet in Steamboat Springs later this month.

The cut line for state was 24th for the girls and 29th for the boys – a bit lower than usual. Yet, the Huskies managed nine state times, winning local bragging rights for this round.

On the girls’ side, the Huskies’ Heidi Lauterbach led the Huskies in fifth place with a time of 1 minute, 47.2 seconds.

Kate Van Hee joined her in the top 10 in eighth, punching in at 1:49.9.

Keegan Garnsey (12th, 1:51.1), Rolena Richardson (14th, 1:55.1), Brittany Peterson (19th, 1:57.6) and Andrea Knight (23rd, 2:00.1) all logged state times for the Huskies.

Eagle Valley placed two in the state zone. Hanna Nelson overcame tough first run to finish 19th (1:57.5). Cameron Lowe picked up the 24th and final state spot with a 2:00.2. Eagle Valley’s third scorer was Bryonny Hill.

The VMS girls were blanked from state on a tough day.

The Gore Rangers’ top three was Katie Wear (30th), Zoie Liotta (34th) and Coco Chalifant (43rd).

On the boys’ side, Eagle Valley’s Kyle Green was top among locals in third, a fantastic finish, in 1:37.8. He was joined by teammates, Chris Brandl (11th, 1:45.4) and Bo Lowe (26th, 1:56.8), in posting state times.

Battle Mountain placed three in the critical top 29, led by Jesse Callendar (eighth, 1:44.5). Teammate, Chad Shoulders, was right behind him in ninth (1:44.8). Grant Stevenson took 18th in 1:50.5.

Vail Mountain also had three knock down the door to state. Josh Smith was 10th in 1:45.3, followed by Blake Higgins (22nd, 1:52.4) and Ray Bernardo (29th, 1:59.1)

The high school regular season ends this weekend with a giant slalom Friday at Golden Peak.

The first run is set for 9:30 a.m., with the second at 1 p.m. Nordic wraps with a classic in Carbondale on Saturday. The state meet is Feb. 20-21 in Steamboat Springs.
