STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colorado – The Steamboat Springs High School girls lacrosse team lost, 12-4, to Battle Mountain on Friday. Steamboat had lost a 7-6 game to Battle Mountain earlier in the season.

But with a short bench and multiple errors, the Sailors were rarely in Friday’s game.

“This was not a good day,” Steamboat coach Betsy Frick said. “We fell apart mentally and weren’t all there.”

Steamboat, however, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, thanks to an Aleigh Aurin goal. Then things headed south for the Sailors (0-8 overall, 0-7 in the Mountain Conference). Steamboat picked up three consecutive yellow cards, and the Huskies capitalized by scoring five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead.

“A lot of stuff just felt really sloppy,” said Emily Spiess, of Steamboat.

With 0.4 seconds left in the first half, Aurin scored her second goal of the game to cut the lead to 5-2. Battle Mountain scored the first four goals in the second half to take a 9-2 lead and put the game out of reach.

“I think we just didn’t work together as a team,” Steamboat co-captain Jessie Wallace said. “We ran the ball a lot instead of cutting, and a lot of it was from those early (yellow) cards.”

Hannah Hartley cut the lead to 9-3 midway through the second half, and Aurin added a late goal with a couple of minutes left for the final result.

Frick said with the season winding down, she would like to see her team play more consistently throughout an entire game. Although the team was without several players on Friday, Frick said the team has to be more prepared before games.
