Battle Mountain soccer players land on all-state team
The Battle Mountain boys soccer team had three players named to the Colorado High School Athletic Association all-state team, announced earlier this week.
Seniors Daniel Sanchez and Grey Glowacki, along with junior Jakob Methvin, all made the 11-man first team roster — the most of any school. Senior Jonny Espinoza earned all-state honorable mention honors as well.
Methvin scored 17 goals and tallied 15 assists this season while Glowacki’s stat line included 16 goals and 13 assists. Glowacki will continue his career next year at Colorado Mesa University. Sanchez was a two-year captain and the anchor for a Husky defense that allowed 18 goals in 20 games in 2023 and 27 goals in 19 games this fall.
The Huskies finished 2024 with a 13-5-1 record but were unable to return to the 4A state title game for a third-straight year after a 3-2 overtime loss to Air Academy in the state semifinals. The Kadets scored on a penalty kick with 0.1 seconds remaining to send that game to overtime. Air Academy went on to defeat Mullen 1-0 in the state final.
Ben Brown won the state player of the year award and Espen Hosoien won coach of the year after the pair guided the Kadets to a 16-1-2 record and the program’s sixth state title — and first since 2018.

The Huskies also had six players named to the Western Slope all-league team. Sanchez was named player of the year and Dave Cope won the coach of the year award. Cope said his fellow league coaches took note of Sanchez’s body of work when voting for the defender prior to the playoff push.
“(He’s) a model of the attributes you want from a student-athlete on and off the field,” Cope said of Sanchez. “Humility and poise at all times. Started in two state finals and won one of them (and) led us back to the final four again this year.”
Joining Sanchez on the first-team roster were Methvin, Glowacki and Espinoza, while Charlie Strauch and Alex Ortega were named to the second team.
Eagle Valley, which finished the year with a 6-7-2 record, also had six players put on the all-league team. Yael Carrillo and Nicolas Rodelo were named to the first team and Fernando Ruiz, Jonathan Sandoval and Juan Gonzalez were named to the second team. Luis Varela was honorable mention.
