Bears race to win over Devils

RIFLE – To opposing defenders, playing against Rifle’s forwards must feel like being in the middle of a Roadrunner cartoon.Just Wile E. Coyote, Eagle Valley got one look at the Bears speedy foursome of Chelsea Webb, Marcy Kreimier, Caitlin Clay and Lauren Schubert, and zoom – they were gone.Webb got the credit for all three of Rifle’s (5-2-1 league, 5-3-1 overall) breakaway goals in Friday’s 4-1 league win over Eagle Valley (0-6-1). The speed of all four of the Bears’ forwards. Rifle head coach Tom Taucher said, created havoc for the Devils’ defense the entire game.”We had speed if we could get the ball there (to them). We sort of saw it during the game,” Taucher said. “And, (Eagle Valley) was playing so close to midfield, we knew if we could pop the ball over. We had a lot of breaks, and it worked out that way.”The play which sprung one of the Bears forwards loose around the midfield area left the confused Devils’ defense flatfooted and confused.

Which in turn gave the Bears numerous breakaways against Eagle Valley goalie Mary Cochrane. The quick scores made up for Rifle’s early slow start.Hoping to catch the Bears napping, Eagle Valley pressed forward and took their only lead in the fifth minute after Michelle Parmenter sailed a shot over Rifle keeper Kadie LaRocque to the high far corner.”I think we had a little hangover from (Thursday’s game against Steamboat),” Taucher said. “We weren’t really marking tight when they distributed the ball across our goal, then our outside midfielder kicked the ball right back into the middle – and they popped it right back in.”Parmenter’s score shook any residue of Thursday’s loss to the Sailors off the Bears.

FloodgatesCochran made three big saves to maintain the Devils slim lead before failing victim to Rifle’s midfield break with nine minutes left in the first half.LaRocque’s well-aimed deep clearing kick found an awaiting Webb just beyond the midfield stripe. And, with no one back to check, the Rifle sophomore tapped a shot by a sprawling Cochran for the tie.Seven minutes later, Webb broke away again, fired away and blasted a shot on Cochran’s hands for the lead.

After firing wide in her first attempt for a hat trick, Webb netted her third goal by intercepting a Cochran clearing pass just outside the penalty area in the 59th minute, then stuffing it back in the net.Mindy Gonzales scored the game’s final goal on a penalty kick to the low far post with three minutes remaining. The win maintains Rifle’s two-game, third-place lead over Moffat County, heading into Monday’s road contest at co-Slope leader Battle Mountain.
