GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Battle Mountain boys basketball used its long-distance approach to take an early lead Friday night. The Glenwood Springs Demons made sure that lead was short-lived.

Glenwood junior Cameron Horning finished with a game-high 21 points to pace the Demons, who used a big run spanning the second and third quarters to overcome an eight-point deficit on their way to a 59-44 class 4A Western Slope League victory at Chavez-Spencer Gymnasium.

‘We were letting a lot of 3s go in, and they were knocking everything down,” said Horning, who also had a game-high nine rebounds and finished 9-of-16 shooting from the field against the Huskies. “In the second half, we just had to keep their 3-pointers from going in. It was pretty simple.”

It sure didn’t seem that way at the beginning of the game for the Demons (7-3 overall, 4-0 in the Slope), who were down for a majority of the first half and, at one point, trailed the Huskies 22-14 after a 3-pointer from Adrian Chivara with 6:01 remaining before halftime. That’s when the Demons’ defense created its offense, forcing turnovers that led to fast-break layups and, eventually, a 25-5 run that put Glenwood in control.

“What led to that was defense,” Glenwood coach Cory Hitchcock said. ‘We were making stops and diving after loose balls. We keep telling these boys that defense creates our offense. When they buy into the defensive aspect of our game, we’re going to score. I think we’re getting it.”

Zack Peterson finished with 12 points and Will Gray added eight for the Demons, who finished shooting 46 percent (23-of-50 shooting) from the field.

Cruz Villalobos finished with 12 points and Owen Riley 11 to pace the Huskies (3-6, 1-2 league), who hit six of their eight 3-pointers in the first half. The Huskies, however, couldn’t recover after trailing by a many as 10 by the middle of the third quarter following Glenwood’s big run.

“After they got up on us, we stopped pushing the ball ourselves,” Battle Mountain coach Tommy Padilla said. “We just stopped completely when we should have stayed aggressive and kept pushing the ball up the floor. But I also think that our guys started getting tired. We only have a seven-man rotation, and that started to show.”

In the second quarter, though, the Huskies showed what they’re capable of.

After a foul shot from Brian Burbidge pulled the Demons within 16-14 with 7:09 left before halftime, Chase Keep converted a 3-point play and Chavira hit his big 3-pointer to put the Huskies up 22-14. That’s when Horning got the demons’ offense going, scoring three baskets within a minute — two of them off fast-break layups in transition — to pull the Demons within 22-20. Mason Yellico’s 3-pointer put Glenwood up 23-22 and, after Chavira’s putback on the other end of the court gave the Huskies their final lead, Gray and Max Glasener hitt layups and Evrett Marr hit a pair of foul shots to give the demons the lead for good.

“We all have a dream of winning a league championship,” Horning said. “We’re not going to let this one game make it harder for us to do that.”

Girls: Glenwood Springs 75, Battle Mountain 46

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Senior guard Jordan DeCrow finished with a game-high 23 points to pace three Glenwood players in double figures, and the first of her six 3-pointers early in the first quarter helped the Demons (8-2, 4-0 4A WSL) take control early and remain unbeaten in league play.

Madi Spence added 21 points and Hailey Armstrong chipped in 14 to pace Glenwood, which went from being tied with the Huskies at five to going up 26-12 on Baattle Mountain by the end of the first quarter. And after the Demons picked up the pace offensively, they kept the Huskies scoreless for a 5:51 time span before a jumper from Aileen Arreola pulled Battle Mountain within 40-14.

The 75 points was a season high for Glenwood, which extended its winning streak in Western Slope League play to 18. Glenwood’s last loss in league play came Feb. 15, 2013 at Rifle.

Elizabeth Olivas finished with 23 points to pace Battle Mountain, with 10 coming in the fourth quarter. Arreola added 10 points for the Huskies.
