blog: Red Tail Camp – Correct Conditions
Vail CO, Colorado
RED TAIL CAMP, Beaver Creek, Colorado ” After Saturday’s snow, the Birds of Prey racecourse is looking quite fast.
With only “one run and done” the racers are relying on instinct to ski fast.
The Monday start is also leaving some American fans in the wake of work.
Relatively empty stands in the finish area aren’t indicative of the high quality of racing happening here at Red Tail Camp.
Weary journalists are talking alternately about the women’s race in Aspen and what’s happening on the course at the moment.
At the moment, the only American journalist clacking away feverishly is myself. It’s kind of a neat feeling, I’ll admit.
Reuters and Associated Press from all over Europe make up the majority of the press corps watching the closed circuit television feed of the race.
The big news is that media is allowed to eat at the VIP tent today. Quite a coups for the brave souls at Red Tail Camp.
A few wide turns on the elongated gates draw a few gasps from the assembled crowd, but it’s nothing compared to the sighs lamenting a countryman’s late finish.
The first fun of the day from Austrian Hannes Reichelt is holding up as the fastest run of the day, out of a dozen racers.
Perennial powerhouse Hermann Maier is up, Swiss racer Didier Couche, and American Bode Miller are due up.
